Saturday, March 1, 2008 - York and
Bolingbrook Updates
We just returned from the York Invite, and
everybody is pretty pumped about our team effort today. We placed
second overall behind York and started to show a lot of the parts that will
make this team a tough one to beat come outdoors. All told, our boys
set four York Field House records today en route to scoring 107 points.
York won the meet with 171 points.

All hail the Faculty King and Queen for
Turnabout. Sheehan looks pretty good in that wee little crown. What a
lift it is to have the most popular, good-looking, and king-like individual
helping us out. Hail to the King!
York Invite Meet Results - Smoody, Busch
Set School Records
We had a sweet meet from beginning to end,
and nearly everyone ran or jumped career indoor bests. Highlights
included:
 | Mat Smoody established a new school,
facility, and meet record by running 1:55.0 for 800 meters. He
looked in control and patient, and I was really pleased with his
effort. Seeing that we are still in our strength phase with
little speed under anyone's legs, that is a really stellar time.
Splits were 27.9 - 57.0 (29.1) - 1:26.4 (29.4) - 1:54.9 (28.5).
Hersey's Kevin Havel ran a strong second with a nice-looking 1:57.6.
Luke Kierys came back from an early week illness to set a new indoor
best of 2:09.3. |
 | Nick Busch and Ed Anderson went 1-2 in
the high jump to score us 18 points. Nick continued his recent
hot streak, clearing 6' 5" to break the school, facility, and meet
record. Ed cleared 6' 0" and also helped the cause by long
jumping 20' 1" for second place overall. |
 | Chano Bernardo ran a powerhouse time
in the 3200 meter run, clocking a 9:34.7 to place third and qualify to
IPTT. Chano's run was one of the more impressive performances I
have seen by a sophomore, but I can't say that it was not expected.
Monday's session of 6 x 1000 in 3:08-3:12 with two minute rest (in the
snow no less) left me thinking that this run was in the offing.
He split 68.5 - 2:21.1 (72.6) - 3:34.6 (73.5) - 4:47.3 (72.7) - 6:00.2
(72.9) - 7:14.2 (74.1) - 8:26.3 (72.1) - 9:34.6 (68.3). How is
that for even splits - 4:47.3 and 4:47.3? Chano did well to move
up gradually, passing the two York guys just before and after the
mile, and he got in a really spirited race with Naperville North's Dan
Harper. Kyle Gibson from NN won the race in 9:28.7. |
 | In the slower heat of the 3200, senior
Paul Kwak set a lifetime PR by running 10:24.1. He split 5:08
and 5:15 and looked good early before lacking speed to finish in the
last 800 meters. |
 | Mookie Williams had a really busy day,
winning the long jump and triple jump despite struggling to get on the
board. His 43' 8" was a facility and meet record in the triple
jump. Mookie also placed fifth in the 55 meters and ran a leg on
our winning 4 x 400 (more on that later). |
 | In the 600, Matt Wiggen continued to
show improvement by running 1:31.8 for 8th place. Mike Grobner
also PR'd in the 600 by running 1:37.4. When Wiggen gets in the
right race and learns to pace the early part of these long sprints, he
will become a really tough 400-800 meter runner. |
 | The 1600 meters today was a great
opportunity for both Alec Bollman and Adam Bethke to make their marks.
Adam ran a fine race, finishing in 4:43.0 to place third in his heat.
That constitutes a six second career best. Alec ran 4:42.7 in
the fast heat, but looked a bit like a sophomore out of his league in
such a fast race. The first 400 went out in 62 and that dragged
Alec out a bit faster than he wanted. Still, the 4:42 is a four
second career best. |
 | George Faber continued to show that he
will be a scoring threat in the hurdles for the rest of the season.
He showed great composure in the high hurdles and ran 7.9 to win his
first varsity hurdles competition. He placed third in the lows.
|
 | Our 4 x 200 of Joe Schweikert, Chris
Norman, Dan Sutton, and Telly Halloran won in a nice time of 1:36.0.
Norman cracked off a sweet 22.9, and Sutton showed that he will be a
force to reckon with come outdoor season. |
 | Last but not least, we qualified to
IPTT and set a facility and meet record by winning the 4 x 400 in
3:29.7. Smoody led off in 51.6, Telly kept a small lead with a
54.0, Norman ran a gutty 52.2, and Tim Williams brought it home in
51.8. Tim ran a really smart anchor leg, trailing the York
runner until the 300 meter mark and then building off the curve and
running away in the last 50 meters. Great job today boys!

Mileage Updates - I have the Miles for
Week 4 and 5 compiled along with the Mileage Progression, but I will have to
post those next week since I left the files on my school account.
Performance Lists - All of the
distance
performance lists are updated to reflect races run at Bolingbrook and
York.
Bolingbrook Results - Tons of PRs and
another team win
We managed to come out of our dual with
Bolingbrook with a 7 point win, which is not bad considering they were top
five in the state last year and return many of those key parts.
Highlights:
 | The highlight race of the day had to
be Tim Williams defeating Kayode Adegoke in the 200 meter dash.
Adegoke placed 8th in both the 100 and 200 last year and ran on
Bolingbrook's 4 x 100 that placed 6th. Mookie recorded an indoor
best of 22.8 seconds to qualify for IPTT and break assistant coach
Sergio Lund's school record of 23.4 seconds. |
 | We had a ton of nice performances in
the 3200 meter run. Four of our juniors ran lifetime bests: Adam
Bethke (10:33), Colin Morlock (10:42), Matt Baran (10:54), and Eric
Blyth (10:56). For the latter two, that was the first time they
had broken 11:00. Even more impressively, freshman Erik Bethke
posted a 10:48 mark in his first 3200 ever and was followed soon after
by A.J. Laskowske with a nice time of 11:10. Behind them, Justin
Smith and Tirth Patel both ran indoor bests, and Eddie Kovach and Tim
Anderson both nearly broke 12:00 for the first time. |
 | Nick Busch continued his early season
hot streak, jumping 6' 4 1/2" to break the indoor school record and
better his mark of 6' 3" from the previous week at St. Charles.
All three of our high jumpers cleared 5' 10", and that group will only
get better when our freshman star from last year, Mykyta Cheshko
returns from basketball this week. |
 | Chano Bernardo and Alec Bollman
engaged in a spirited dual in the 800 meter run with Bollman pulling
away to win in a near lifetime best of 2:10. Chano ran 2:11 to
place second. IN the varsity section, Paul Kwak broke 2:20 for
the first time (2:18), and Eric Rodriguez put on a sweet kick to nab
second in a lifetime best of 2:25. |
 | The 600 meters brought out a number of
solid performances. Smoody ran a solid 1:28.2 after splitting
2:03 in the 4 x 800 relay. |
 | In the 1600 we scored a ton of points
despite not running any really blazing times. Alex Mourousias
returned from injury to get the win in 4:58 with Luke Kierys trailing
closely behind in 4:59. Freshmen Sam Kwak (5:15) and Lucas
Roehrborn (5:23) made nice debuts at 1600 meters while Drew Shaler
(5:15) approached his lifetime best from last year's outdoor season. |
 | And finally, in the most anticipated
race of the day, the fearsome foursome of Chano Bernardo, Alex
Mourousias, Ryan Wojdyla, and Erik Kuerschner earned Big Jugs of
Gatorade by winning the distance 4 x 400 exhibition relays.
Round Two will be this Friday night at Proviso followed shortly
thereafter by Round Three at Glenbrook South in what Coach Kurt
Hasenstein has dubbed "The John Nalley Memorial Mile Relay." |

Monday, February 18 - Results from St.
Charles Dual
The Palatine boys track team had its first
meet of the season Friday night against St. Charles East, and the early
results were superb even as they showed a lot of room for growth. We
won the meet by two points thanks to a nice 3:42 run in the 4 x 400 relay
behind the legs of Matt Wiggen, Mat Smoody, George Faber, and Mookie
Williams.
Distance-wise, we set a ton of new indoor PRs,
a few lifetime PRs, and most everyone who ran this meet last year did
significantly better. Highlights from both the distance side and full
track team are below:
 | We set-up five separate 4 x 800 teams
since we were approaching the meet as a workout, and a number of guys
delivered nice performances. Adam Bethke ran a 2:10 PR to out
race his brother Erik (2:16 - not bad for a frosh). Kierys and
Bollman dueled to near identical 2:13 splits leading off, and both
Juan Perez and Mike Grobner looked nice in their leg 2 runs. |
 | Mat Smoody started off this season
much faster than last. His 2:38.5 was a full seven seconds
better than last year's 2:45 opening effort in the same meet.
Rough splits were 30 - 61 (31) -1:32 (31) - 2:06.0 (33.) - 2:38.5
(32). He also split a 52.4 on leg two of our 4 x 400, which was
a full half second better than last year's 52.9. Not bad for
training outside and not running anything sub 35 second or sub 70 pace
yet - it must be nice to have speed |
 | The open 800 saw a couple of stellar
competitive efforts by Lewis Conley and Juan Perez. Neither ran
a great time (2:21 each), but both made a hard pass with a lap to go,
were dropped, and then fought back to nail the St. Charles East kid at
the line for second. The point swing helped us win the meet. |
 | Matt Wiggen found out the hard way how
to run a 600. He went out in 27.0 and fell off due to going out
too hard. Still, he ran a 1:34 in his first 600 ever and came
back with a nice 57 split in the 4 x 400 relay. Alec Bollman ran
much better in his second race, hitting 1:35 and nearly winning the
race at the tape. Sam Kwak also gets major props for taking it
out and running with great confidence. His 2:21-1:41 double was
impressive for a freshman. |
 | The 1600 had a ton of early
highlights. Chano Bernardo tied his all-time best 1600, running
4:46.0 to place a close second to Mushrush of St. Charles East.
Tactically, Chano ran poorly, trying to pass too hesitantly and
running most of the race in lane two. Still, he gave a good
effort despite some lingering foot issues. Behind him, Colin
Morlock (4:52), Paul Kwak (4:53), and Adam Bethke (4:54) gave great
efforts in their second races. Those are lifetime bests for
Colin and Paul. Matt Baran (5:08), Eric Blyth (5:13), and Tim
Anderson (5:41) also opened much faster than a year ago. |
 | In the F/S 1600, Erik Bethke ran 5:02
to establish the second best time I have ever had a freshman run at
this meet. Glenn Morris' 5:01 from 2003 is the best I've seen so
Erik is in some select company. A.J. Laskowske also opened well
with a 5:17 which could have been much faster without the hesitancy in
the opening 800. Tirth Patel (5:20) and Justin Smith (5:21) set
indoor bests while Ryan Wojdyla (5:28) made a great mid-race charge
and freshman Erik Kuerschner (5:29) showed that he is much improved.
Freshman Jake Alberti (5:49) and sophomore Jake Bogdanowciz (6:01)
both established new lifetime bests. |
In action from the other event areas:
 | Senior Nick Busch became the first
Palatine athlete to qualify to the IPTT indoor invite, jumping 6' 3"
the first meet out and narrowly missing a school record attempt at 6'
5". Nick's great series of jumps really got the team fired up.
Junior Ed Anderson went 5' 11". Sean McDonough completed a 1-2-3
PHS sweep. |
 | We went 1-2 in the pole vault behind
Matt Nisivaco and Dan LaRocca. I am pretty sure that both of
them cleared 11' 0". |
 | Our shot put guys did a tremendous
job, taking 1-2-3 to really help us win the meet. The big
highlight was sophomore Tyler Jones throwing 45' 5" in the first meet
where he has ever performed using the glide. Martynas Groza also
set a lifetime best with his 43' 9" heave. Senior Jim Rudd
placed third. |
 | Chris Norman got out a bit slow, but
still ran 57 seconds for 400 meters. We later found out that
this was his debut in the open quarter. |
 | George Faber won both the 55 low and
high hurdles and looked great running a 57 in the 4 x 400 relay.
It is quickly becoming clear how motivated George is and what a great
leader he will be for the team this season. |
 | Tim Williams scratched on all of his
long jump attempts, but ran a sweet 54 second anchor in the 4 x 400. |
 | We look like we have a lot of young
kids with talent. Freshman Stephon Thabuteau is a star in the
making at the 200-400-600-800 distances, and Alphonso Butera and Eric
Rebolledo look like they could be nice 400 meter runners based on
their competitive runs in the 4 x 400. Several other freshman
looked impressive despite this being their first ever high school
competition. |

Mileage Updates - I uploaded the
Miles for Week 3
along with the mileage progression. Bethke is winning, mostly due to
his maniacal 420 day plus streak of running every day and the extra two
miles he ran on Saturday to go over 70 for the week. Find where you
rank in the first
Track Mileage
Progression.
Performance List Updates - I put in
all of the performances so far in the
800,
1600,
and
4 x 800 into the
2008
Performance List. Check it after each meet to see where your
season best compares to the other guys on the team.
Sunday, February 10 - Mat Smoody Signs
with Wisconsin
On Thursday this past week, Mat Smoody signed
with the University of Wisconsin at Madison. What a great opportunity!
Mat should fit in well with a track team that has won at least eight Big Ten
track titles in a row (indoor and outdoor). Furthermore, Wisconsin has
seemingly shifted a bit more of its resources to middle-distance runners.
Just this past weekend, two Badgers broke 4:00 in the mile, Jacobs alum Evan
Jager ran 4:03, and two Wisco redshirt freshmen ran 1:51 in the 800.
Mat should fit right in with his speed and versatility from the 400 meters
to the 1500 and mile. I congratulate Mat on his hard work and this
great opportunity to continue his running career.

Above: Mat officially signs his letter of
intent to Wisconsin.
Below: Mat poses with his proud family.

Other Potential Signings - All of our
seniors are currently mulling their college options. Tim Anderson
looks like he will attend Eastern Illinois University. He won't run
there, but will be reunited with alums Alex Soto and Matt Dettloff.
Eddie Lopez looks like he might also be headed there and may walk-on.
Alex Mourousias has applied to every small Division III college east of the
Mississippi and plans to run at one of them. I have no idea where he
will end up amongst the nine colleges he applied to. I am not sure yet
about Lewis Conley's college plans. Last but not least, Kevin O'Brien
will be attending the United States Coast Guard Academy, having made it
through the Academy's incredibly rigorous selection process. He will
run for them and compete at the Division III level.
Mileage Updates - I just posted Miles
for Week 1 and
Week 2 of the
young track season. Look for the Mileage Progression soon.
Compare your work load this season to what you were able to do last year at
this time. Despite the snow and cold, we are running a bit more than
last year.
Check out this picture from the Polar Bear
Christmas Party. We will leave the terrible gift of the night unnamed
(Lewis you sick child, mayonnaise!), but I will remark that I do still have
Larson's giraffe and it will make a reappearance someday when you all least
expect it.

Friday,
February 1 - Snow Day + Saturday
Practice Plan
God has seen fit to grace us with one of the
greatest things ever invented - a snow day. Unfortunately, this will
throw off the rhythm of our training a bit. Below is the practice plan
for Sat., February 2.
Practice on Saturday will be at 9:00 am. It is optional
if you have something important going on (family trip, etc.), but I
expect everyone to be there. Coach Sheehan will be running things. F/S
will stay at the school and run Frontier Extended (6.5 miles) + 10
strides. Varsity (including Larson, Bollman, Bernardo) will be driving
to Barrington for long run + hills. Here's the breakdown:
F/S from PHS (6.5 miles) - Alberti, Benzo (4 miles to underpass),
E. Bethke, Bogdanowicz (4 miles to underpass), Colish, Grobner, Kovach,
Kuerschner, S. Kwak, Laskowske, McCauley, McPherson, Murphy, Patel,
Roehrborn, Shaler, Smith, Sund, Wojdyla
Varsity to Barrington (7 miles, 10 hills - straight out to the
hill) - Anderson, Baran, Bollman, Kierys, Larson, Novikov, Olson,
Rodriguez, Smoody, Wiggen
Varsity to Barrington (10 miles, 10 hills - run the big rectangle
to get to the hill) - Bernardo, A. Bethke, Blyth, Conley, P. Kwak,
Morlock, Perez, Starcevich
Other: Mourousias - ell at school, stretch, jog on shelf to tolerance
